        Overview 
        Nanjing, located in the Yangtze River Delta, is China’s most prosperous and vibrantly developing region, and is the capital city of Jiangsu, the most economically developed province in China. The city covers an area of 6,587.02 km2 and has a permanent resident population of over 8 million. 

        Abundant scientific and education talents  
        Nanjing, with over 50 institutions of tertiary education, more than 600 above provincial-level research institutions, 810,000 college students (including undergraduates and postgraduates), and 80 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), boasts numerous advantages in talent resources. The total number of undergraduate students and the number of institutions of tertiary education in Nanjing rank No. 3 among all Chinese cities. Nanjing’s tertiary education institutions account for 40% of Jiangsu’s total number of such institutions. In terms of scientific research, Nanjing has 60% of the provincial level and above research institutions in Jiangsu and boasts the third largest R&D capability across the country. The number of undergraduate students among every 10,000 people ranks No. 1 and the number of postgraduate students among every 10,000 people ranks No. 2 in China.
        In 2009, the Ministry of Science and Technology identified Nanjing as the only pilot city for the comprehensive reform of science and technology system. In 2010, the General Office of the State Council listed Nanjing as one of the first pilot cities for Triple-Network Convergence, and the National Development and Reform Committee and the Ministry of Science and Technology listed Nanjing as one of the first pilot cities for innovative city development. Nanjing was also named by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as the first “Famous Chinese Software City” and awarded the title of “Model City for National Intellectual Property Rights Protection” by the State Intellectual Property Office. In 2011, Nanjing was named a “National Technologically Advanced City” in the national technological advancement appraisal conducted by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

        Favorable location and convenient transportation 
        Nanjing is a regional central city and a gateway metropolis of the Yangtze River Delta. It is easily accessible from nearby regions, with its influence extending to a vast regional market that covers an area of 55,000 km2 and a permanent population of 31 million. Nanjing has the largest inland waterway port in Asia, the largest railway hub in Asia, and the fifth largest international freight airport in China. Nanjing is an integrated transportation hub, boasting a three-dimensional transportation network that consists of an airport, high-speed railways, metro lines, and the port.
        Upon completion of the Nanjing Lukou International Airport Phase II Project in 2014, the annual passenger volume is expected to reach 30 million. The Nanjing port is a multi-functional river-sea port for waterway and inland transportation, cargo distribution, and international trade. Upon completion of the 12.5-m Deep Yangtze River Course Dredging Project, ships with 80,000 DWT will be able to dock directly in Nanjing. Nanjing has the largest electric, mechanized, and modern cargo train marshalling station in Eastern China and is connected to the main railway networks and major cities across China through the Jin-Pu (Beijing-Nanjing), Hu-Ning (Shanghai-Nanjing), and Ning-Wu (Nanjing-Wuhu) arterial railways. Nanjing South Railway Station is one of the five origination stations for the Jing-Hu railway. The Jing-Hu high-speed railway commenced operation in 2011 provides service from Nanjing to Shanghai in about 75 minutes and service to Beijing in 4 hours.

        Profound historic and cultural legacies 
        Nanjing is renowned both domestically and internationally as an historical city with a profound cultural heritage. Famous for being the “Ancient Capital of Six Dynasties and Capital City for Ten Dynasties,” Nanjing has served as the capital of 10 regimes in its 2,500-year history. With its unique blend of imperial magnificence and southern Chinese grace, Nanjing has a long, glorious history of cultural heritage and is a significant “Capital of Poetry”, “Capital of Buddhism" and “Cultural Hub of China.” Nanjing’s cultural resources include numerous cultural heritages and 387 protected historic sites. UNESCO has listed 4 cultural heritages, including Nanjing Yun brocade manufacturing techniques, in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the Representative List of National Cultural Heritage contains10 cultural heritages, including the Qinhuai Lantern Festival.
        In 2008, amazing archaeological discoveries were made in the Chang Gan Temple ruins in ancient Jinling, as Nanjing was formerly called. A large volume of metals was excavated from the Ashoka tower and important relics of the Buddha were unearthed. The city has a wide array of cultural resources, including 17 libraries, 16 cultural centers, and 55 museums, providing tremendous potential for cultural development. Adhering to the development strategy of a Cultural Nanjing, we have continuously developed a strong public cultural service system, created cultural industry development policies, and effectively promoted the cultural development and enhancement of the overall strengths of Nanjing. In recent years, Nanjing has been elected as the Mainland China City with the Strongest Soft Strengths and awarded the UN Habitat Scroll of Honor Special Citation.

        Habitable natural landscape and ecology 
        Nanjing’s landscape is a combination of mountains, water, and forests in one city. The city, a winner of the UN Habitat Scroll of Honor Special Citation, boasts a strategic location along the Yangtze River, magnificent Zhongshan, the romantic Qinhuai River, the bustling Confucius Temple and exquisite Xuanwu Lake. The pioneer Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-sen once commented in his “Strategies for Founding the Republic” that “Nanjing enjoys a superb location unmatched among the world’s metropolises, where mountain, water, and plain landscapes are combined in perfection. Nanjing’s prime location at the center of the most prosperous region along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Delta also promises unlimited future growth potential for the city.”
        Low-altitude hills and bodies of water surround Nanjing, with the magnificent Yangtze River running through the city from west to east. The city has an intertwined waterway network made up of the Qinhuai River, Chuhe River, Xuanwu Lake, Mochou Lake, Shijiu Lake and Gucheng Lake that provides vast water resources.
        Nanjing has a sub-tropical humid climate with distinctive, yet comfortable, seasons and plentiful precipitation. The average annual temperature is 15.4 degrees Celsius and average annual precipitation is 1,106 mm. The city, with a well-established comprehensive ecological system and picturesque park views, was bestowed the globally recognized “Green Oscar”—the LivCom Awards Gold Award.

        opening up to the world
        Nanjing has two class 1 ports. Ships of foreign nationalities can reach Nanjing’s port directly through the Yangtze River estuary. Over 140 passenger and freight flights serving regions in China and Asia and connecting to European and American countries are easily accessible from Nanjing Lukou International Airport. Nanjing has two land customs supervision points, enabling direct customs clearance for sea and land transportation; one railway customer supervision point with international container trains from Nanjing to Alashankou. In addition, Nanjing has set up special customs supervision zones such as export processing zones and bonded logistics centers (type B) and provides enterprises with services such as bonded processing and bonded logistics.
        The 2013 Asian Youth Games was held in nanjing and 2014 Youth Olympic Games will be held in Nanjing. International Olympic Committee (IOC) family members from 205 countries and regions will gather in Nanjing during these events, providing an excellent opportunity and platform to showcase Nanjing and China.
